the Black Swan Middleham by John Freeman

Black Swan Sign

John Freeman is well known for his paintings of the North Yorkshire landscape, and in recent years, working almost exclusively in water colours, has established a reputation for his exciting snow scenes of the area creating a combination of clarity and warmth not often found in this type of subject.

One of his latest subjects has been the Black Swan in Middleham, shown from the rear of the Swine cross which is found at the head of the town and recalls the grant Richard the third gave in 1479 for a twice yearly fair and market.

The picture depicts the town on a wintersevening after a light fall of snow and when life moved at a more gentle pace.

Prints and cards of the painting are available from the pub for a small fee.
