Carricks Fish, Snape

Carricks Fish Van

Carricks (Fish) Limited was established in 1929 by Herbert Thomas Carrick in North Yorkshire, UK. 1929 was a bleak year in the UK and only the priveleged had jobs. Bert Carrick was one of the unlucky ones, with no job and no dole.

On a cold day in late 1929 he rode into North Yorkshire on his motorcycle with few clothes and little money. He stayed with friends hoping to find work, but jobs were scarce. He soon noticed that the grocer, the butcher the green grocer and hardware persons all called at the cottage, but no fishmongers.

To his motorcycle he fitted a large clothes chest and inside placed some tools. Bert collected fish for his new venture from the local North Yorkshire railway stations. He was now in business, a fully-fledged fishmonger. Bert found door-to-door selling slow so stood in the markets of towns in North Yorkshire.

He based his fish business in Snape, near the market town of Bedale in North Yorkshire, UK. Over 70 years later the business is still run from the same North Yorkshire address by the third generation of the family. The family still supports the local markets with modern mobile units, selling a large selection of fresh fish and seafood delivered daily from many British ports.
